When horse-drawn omnibuses took to the city streets in 1875, the history of Kraków's transport began. Now, after almost 150 years of operation, the means of public transport the city relies on are very different, but the essential purpose of MPK S.A. (Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne) remains unchanged: to offer passengers, including those with reduced mobility, safe and comfortable journeys. Thanks to regular investment, a modern, comfortable and environmentally-friendly fleet of vehicles is at the disposal of all passengers. MPK is also taking a number of initiatives aimed at different groups of passengers, including campaigns to promote pro-social and pro-ecological attitudes.

The numerous certificates the company has been awarded attest to the high quality of its services. In 2009, for example, Forbes magazine recognised Kraków's transport system as one of the ten best in the world, while in 2019, it was awarded the Senior-Friendly certificate for introducing facilities for older people on Kraków's vehicles, which primarily meant the low-floor design that makes it easier to get on and off them.
